How kids and their families can best explore the greatest things to see and do on BOTH the Treasure and Space Coasts of Florida.

HEY KIDS! Where else can your family take a morning boat tour past pelicans and mangrove forests, climb up an indoor rock wall, ride gentle horses along a beach, explore recov-ered sunken treasure, kayak past gazelle and rhinos, and smash a platter of cooked crabs with a hammer for dinner? No place else but in our own back yard! This very special part of Florida is home to all sorts of ad-ventures, and Fun in the Sun - a kids guide to Indian River County...and BEYOND!  is the key to helping you unlock all the fun doors you didn't know about, until now. And it was researched and written by an educa-tor, and 12 kids just like you! You'll learn about:
- beaches
- boat trips
- fishing trips
- parks
- classes
- nature
- great birthday party ideas
- attractions
- out of town adventures
- places to eat
- once-a-year events

and much, much more.

A simple locator map will help you decide how close or far every location is to your house.

So what are you waiting for?
Get outside, and have some
Fun in the Sun!

AND A BIG THANKS FROM THE AUTHORS…

to our parents,  for driving us to all the places we needed to get to so we could learn about them and put them in this book, and for helping us with our writing.

to our teachers, for encouraging us with this project, and giving us the
time to do the work.

to our ‘readers’, who read over our notes and  book
draft to make sure it all sounded right, caught our boo-boos, and offered suggestions to make our book sound even better:

Bonnie Swanson, our Principal
Sharon Cascio, our Elementary Specialist
Diane Digiacomo, our Science Teacher
Terry Baird, a 4th grade teacher and the head of our environmental Eco-Troop.

to Dawn Fronduto, for the great back cover photograph that makes us look so good.

and to Lowell Fox, who made the cool map, figured out all the technical computer stuff, and had the greatest of patience to let Debbie run with this project.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS WHO WROTE THIS BOOK

Bet you are wondering about who wrote this book.

We are a group of fourth graders and a teaching assistant at Pelican Island Elementary School in Sebastian, Florida. We thought this book would be helpful for kids to learn what we discovered – that there really is a lot to do in our area!

Here’s a little something about each of us:

Debbie Fox is the Art Lady and she works with the amazing kids at Pelican Island Elementary, and then goes home to her neat husband, two smart kids and two goofy white dogs. She is especially fond of snacking on green grapes and cheddar cheese, and always seems to be looking for more time to curl up with a good book to read.

Melissa Gerry likes cheerleading, the color purple and macaroni and cheese. You might find her playing board games or reading, but she really likes to play outside.

Sorca Jordan is just crazy about her black labs named Tommy and Bella. She wants to be a pediatric surgeon, and her favorite colors are black, light green and baby blue.

Andrea Mahovetz loves to surf at the Sebastian Inlet, goes roller skating, and when she slows down long enough, to play with her dog; a miniature pinscher named Starlit.

Michael Abt is an ‘extreme sport’ kind of kid who goes dirt biking and skateboarding. He likes steak, the color red, and listening to rap and punk rock music while he draws.

Isabelle Vernon wants to become a veterinarian that cares for all kinds of animals. She likes to make paper fortune tellers with animal messages in them, out of her favorite color pink paper.

Adam Davis is a fun-loving boy who enjoys reading a good book, finishing a challenging video game, playing sports, and creating new things out of stuff he finds.

He is a caring big brother to Sam and a trustworthy friend.

Marissa Lamonda is a talented artist who likes to draw and paint all kinds of pictures. She also likes to spend time with her grandma baking tasty cookies and brownies and also going for fast bike rides.

Michelle DeLucia is a straight ‘A’ student who just won first place in the school spelling bee. She can’t decide yet if she wants to be a writer, dancer, singer or lawyer when she grows up.

Blase Parkinson’s grandparents think his realistic pencil drawings are just great. He’s on a soccer team, and likes to explore the beaches on summer mornings looking for shark’s teeth.

Chelsea Brady likes to do gymnastics and cheerleading. When she wants to slow things down, she reads, listens to music, and plays with her crazy cat named Bonkers. She’d like to be a professional competitive surfer when she gets older.

Brittney Golden likes basketball and cheerleading, and is very athletic as well as a great student. She loves cats and writing, and might be an actress or fiction writer someday.

Dorothea O’Leary rides her scooter and plays in the woods with her friends every weekend. She plays music in a band, and lives with her mom, dad, brother, sister and goldfish.

Melody Ballas, our cover artist, loves playing soccer, basketball and going to gymnastics classes. She helps her grandma out at their church nursery playing with the little kids. She has two pet hermit crabs, and really loves to sing!

how kids can inspire grown-ups with the really neat things to do all up and down the coast became the art & liter-acy project for 4th graders: a gift to their families and their community.

An excellent research task for students who learned what to love about their home
.  A great resource, it is full of the stuff that kids want to do and gives all the details grownups need to know (websites, phone numbers, addresses, hours, etc.).  Terrific illustra-tions of people, boats, anim-als, birds and fish throughout.

Absolute must for Grammas and Grandpas.   Available through us and all major booksellers.
